Several weeks have passed since the news broke about the intense spread of COVID-19 and the subsequent “lockdown” that ensued. Now more than ever, people are starting to take their health seriously. Health food stores are being swamped with people stocking up on supplements like Vitamin C, probiotics, Vitamin D, and more. Americans are finally asking the question: What can I do to protect myself or limit a move severe expression from COVID-19? Is there any hope for a cure?

While certain medications like Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine have shown slight benefit in treating COVID-19 and preventing severe respiratory illness, they have not solved the problem or been the end-all cure. Convalescent plasma has also shown some anecdotal benefit with sick individuals. However, further research must be done to evaluate its effectiveness.

In the race for solutions, practitioners in both conventional and non-conventional healthcare settings are beginning to look more closely at the potential use of IV nutrients to aid patients with COVID-19 and to strengthen the immune system. Intravenous administration of nutrients, like Vitamin C, are gaining popularity because they have the ability to reach peak plasma concentrations much quicker than oral doses. By giving these nutrients IV, you bypass any absorption issues within the gastrointestinal tract and also avoid unwanted side effects (like diarrhea, nausea, and more).

Could IV Nutrients be the Key to COVID-19 and Strengthening the Immune System?

Let’s talk about a few key IV ingredients that are gaining attention in the midst of the pandemic (and rightfully so) that our center offers to patients.

Vitamin C

IV Vitamin C has recently made the headlines as a potential treatment for hospitalized patients. Doctors in Wuhan have moved a clinical trial into phase 2 using daily megadoses of Vitamin C (24,000 mg) to treat more serious cases.

Vitamin C, otherwise known as Ascorbic Acid, is a nutrient that has antioxidant properties. While it has historically been shown to prevent severe flu illness as well as reduce any cold and flu symptoms by as much as 85%, it is now showing some promising benefits with COVID-19. When infected patients become severely ill, their bodies release a “cytokine storm”. This reaction can lead to significant damage in the lungs (particularly the alveolar capillaries) due to the accumulation of neutrophils. Vitamin C has the potential to prevent this process and also aid in the reduction of alveolar fluid.

As intravenous infusions apply to those seeking to protect and optimize their health, we do know that it enhances immune cell function and protects the body from oxidative stress. Because of these facts, NYCIM routinely uses Vitamin C as an immune booster. We believe that by supplying the body with all the necessary ingredients, it can heal itself.

“Each patient receives an IV that is tailored to their unique needs and biological makeup. We practice personalized medicine, optimizing your immune system beyond the basic, generalized protocol.”

Glutathione

The mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells and it’s incredibly important to protect them. The “knight in shining armor” who guard our mitochondria is none other than glutathione.

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative damage. This potent tripeptide makes sure that heavy metals, organic toxins, and free radicals generated during normal metabolism don’t damage our mitochondria. In turn, our cellular capability to function improves, and each system and organ (including our immune system) can perform unencumbered and optimized.

Another action that comes from glutathione is the protection of the lungs against the development of pathological conditions. Respiratory infections as well as ear, nose, and throat conditions, have been associated with oxidative stress due to a depletion of glutathione. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of glutathione supplementation to improve outcomes in patients with ENT conditions.

The introduction of glutathione intravenously can also aid in recycling other antioxidants, like vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as alpha lipoic acid and CoQ10, thus achieving a synergistic effect in preventing damage to important cellular structures that are often caused by reactive oxygen species.

Magnesium

Viruses associated with respiratory infections (i.e. SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19) refer to the viruses that invade and proliferate in the epithelial cells of the respiratory tracts that could cause respiratory and systemic symptoms. Intravenous magnesium or inhalation administration has been shown to promote bronchodilation and to improve lung function in acute and chronic lung diseases (COPD, asthma, etc.). The documented benefits in asthmatic patients were associated with reduced lung hyperinflation and improvement of respiratory muscle strength.

Utilized intravenously, magnesium has many documented positive effects. As one study noted, “Mg has a strong relation with the immune system, in both nonspecific and specific immune response, also known as innate and acquired immune response.

Taurine

Taurine is a sulfur containing amino acid that is formed from cysteine. As we age, have inflammation or infections in our liver, lack of cysteine in diet, medications like corticosteroids that cause depletion and increased excretion, or even B6 deficiency cause the levels to become much lower.

When our body is trying to fight off infection, our white blood cells release an amino acid that is almost like an atomic bomb and is also known as a cytokine storm. Although this is helpful to rid infection, it can cause damage to areas like the lungs. However, if our bodies are high in Taurine, this lovely amino acid will mediate or remedy the damage that would be done.

Studies have shown that Taurine can have a positive impact on our immune system. Specifically on our thymus gland and our intestinal microbiome

We get our sources of taurine through diet but it is only found in meat and certain seafood. Taurine not only helps to support our immune function but has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The benefits of IV infusions include immediacy in the rapid acquisition of nutrients as well as the delivery of precise quantities of nutrients.

Zinc

Zinc is a trace mineral that has been gaining credibility as an antiviral. Some of the interest in zinc has stemmed from the fact that zinc-deficient populations are often most at risk for viral infections such as HIV and Hepatitis C. Other studies have demonstrated that zinc plays a role in the viral response and can actually prevent effective RSV infection in vitro. The American Society for Microbiology stated, “Zinc treatment applied at a therapeutic dose and in the right form has the potential to drastically improve the clearance of both chronic and acute viral infections, as well as their accompanying pathologies and symptoms.”

All that to say, zinc has antiviral capabilities and can improve the function of your immune system. Here at NYCIM, we have focused on using zinc intravenously for the enhancement of your immune system, boosting your body to peak performance.

Personalized IV Infusions

“At NYCIM, we take these immune-boosting ingredients a step further by personalizing each IV, down to the exact dosages.”
Heather Lowery, PA

NYCIM is offering personalized IV’s using all or some of these ingredients (as well as other supportive oxidative therapies) to improve your innate immune surveillance mechanisms, enhance antiviral immunity, stimulate detoxification pathways, and optimize your body’s functions.

Remember, prevention is key!
