More than 33% of Americans suffer from chronic pain, and people are searching for solutions other than drugs, unnecessary surgeries and deep injections to provide relief. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF or PEMT) is a non-invasive, painless treatment for various injuries, bone-related conditions and pains. The treatment works by emitting a pulsating, varying intensity and frequency electromagnetic field, coming from a solenoid placed around the patient. The application of pulsed magnetic fields has, through research findings, been shown to help the body to restore normal potentials at an accelerated rate, thus aiding the healing of most wounds, regenerating tissue and reducing swelling faster.
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy replicates the Earth’s natural magnetic field, which we were once strongly connected to. Over time this magnetic field has gotten weaker (an estimated 10% weaker since the 19th century) and due to industrialization and modernization, we are further separated from the Earth’s natural magnetic field. The therapy actually originated from NASA’s research involving the benefits of pulsed electromagnetic fields on astronauts for fatigue, depression, bone loss and other symptoms following even short trips to outer space. Scientists discovered that the cause was due to astronauts being without this beneficial natural field emanating from our Earth.
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy was approved by the FDA in 1979 specifically for the healing of nonunion fractures, which came after a Columbia University study that was encouraged by NASA, and has recently gained attention in the U.S (even appearing as a segment on the Dr. Oz Show). The value of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been shown to cover a wide range of conditions, with well-documented trials carried out by hospitals, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, and neurologists.
Clinical experience has shown that pulsed electromagnetic field therapy may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:
Disruption of electromagnetic energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, whatever the initial cause. This can happen anywhere in the disease process and contributes to the inability to recover. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy addresses this impaired chemistry dysfunction and on a grander scale the complete function of cells. Utilizing low-frequency electromagnetic fields generated from the medical solenoid device, even the weakest strengths pass right through the body in a safe manner, penetrating every cell, tissue, organ and even bone without being absorbed or altered. As these pulsating electromagnetic fields pass through the body, they stimulate most of the electrical and chemical processes in the tissues, thus improving cell metabolism, regeneration abilities, and contributing to the improved repair of tissue.
Pulsed electromagnetic field devices deliver beneficial, health-enhancing fields and frequencies to the cells, addressing the impaired chemistry and stimulating the proper functioning of the cells. As they pass through, they stimulate most of the electrical and chemical processes in the tissues and are specifically designed to positively support cellular energy, resulting in better cellular health and function.
A large benefit of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is that there are absolutely no side-effects and treatment takes approximately 20-30 minutes. It is applied by running an electrical current through a copper coil which creates a magnetic field (there are many different styles of devices and technology), which penetrates through the body, including muscle tissue and even bone. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy improves blood circulation and increases oxygen distribution around the body (when blood cells are stacked together, they are not working to their full potential), making it a very useful and non-invasive therapeutic option for pain relief and post-injury healing. PEMF also encourages the blood cells to spread out and reduce plaque in the bloodstream to increase blood viscosity.
“PEMF is a benefit for Mankind from infant to the geriatric. PEMF will lead to a change in the paradigm of medicine.”

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study concluded pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMT) “reduced pain and disability and appears to be a potentially useful therapeutic tool for the conservative management of chronic lower back pain.”

The beneficial therapeutic effects of selected low-energy, time-varying magnetic fields, called pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs), have been documented with increasing frequency since 1973. Furthermore, double-blind evidence of therapeutic effects in other clinical disorders has emerged. These data, coupled with well-controlled laboratory findings on pertinent mechanisms of action, have begun to place PEMFs on a therapeutic par with surgically invasive methods but at considerably less risk and cost.
2009 clinical study: results indicated that PEMF therapy had been used successfully in the management of postsurgical pain and edema, the treatment of chronic wounds, and in facilitating vasodilatation and angiogenesis.

2016 clinical study: results suggest that PEMF therapy is effective for pain management in knee osteoarthritis patients and also affects pain threshold and physical functioning.

Research is currently being developed on pulsed electromagnetic field devices for use as a noninvasive countermeasure to enhance bone retention, prevent or alleviate muscle atrophy, and augment natural healing/regeneration processes in astronauts. As stated in the article: “On Earth, this device could be useful in the treatment of various muscle diseases, age- and cancer-related muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, and other bone diseases.”

At the New York Center of Innovative Medicine, Pulsed Electromagnetic field therapy is one of many different treatments considered for each patient. We employ larger PEMF machines like the Alphatron pictured at the top of this page as well as smaller units such as the AmpCoil. However, the use of this therapy is only performed on patients after an in-depth initial evaluation reveals it would be necessary for your personalized program of treatment. Because each person is unique, and their health needs are different, there is no set protocol for using PEMF therapy nor is the patient able to request the use of this therapy if the medical team finds it would not be as helpful as another treatment or specific combination of therapies. The ultimate goal is the complete restoration of health in the most efficient and safe manner, and with so many therapeutic options, it is impossible to know if pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is right for you without an initial evaluation at our clinic.
