European Biological Medicine is a holistic form of medicine that has been used and refined for thousands of years by some of history’s greatest medical, scientific and philosophical masters. It is based on the approach of treating the patient – not the disease – by restoring and balancing one’s own healing mechanisms.
Many patients feel their health problems have dominated their lives, affecting work, relationships, and beyond. Relying solely on conventional methods does very little to address root causes, and typically does not lead to sustainable, long-term health. Unlike western medicine, which predominantly relies on a symptomatic approach to healing, Biological Medicine supports and enhances the body’s natural healing systems to do what they are meant to do – function optimally. This is accomplished by proper nutrition, cleansing the body of toxins, and restoration of the natural innate systemic regulation that all of us are born with. Biological medicine views disease and its symptoms as some sort of imbalance, toxicity or physiological disturbance which can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from emotional issues to physical stressors to environmental toxicity. If the root cause of a particular ailment or disease is not addressed, then the body’s ability to attain and sustain complete health is extremely limited.
There have been many advancements and a plethora of research in the field of European biological medicine, including the work of Dr. Alfred Pischinger. In 1975, Dr. Pischinger, then Professor of Histology and Embryology at the University of Vienna, presented the results of a lifetime of research on the extracellular matrix which illustrated that the origins of health were not in the individual cells of the body, but within the connective tissue of the matrix. This understanding acts as a basic principle for all types of European biological medicine.
Clinical experience has shown that European biological medicine may be used for a number of conditions and issues and that the benefits include:
Biological medicine consists of many different therapies that are based on a simple philosophy: if biological processes are corrected within the body and the proper function of organs is restored, the body will naturally heal itself.
Many of the problems that modern medicine faces are based on the truth that treating on a symptomatic basis can be complex. The ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision) currently has several hundreds of codes for symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, and ill-defined conditions. With more and more medications that work directly on a single symptom, the treatment of multi-faceted, multi-symptomatic conditions has become very complex.
Much of medicine has become obsessed with alleviating symptoms, and success in the conventional medical arena is defined as the relief of symptoms. Yet a new notion among many in the medical community is challenging this current model. A new approach focusing on regulation and restoration of the systems and organs of the body, rather than management and suppression of symptoms that are often associated with disease and illness is now gaining steam.
By targeting systems and organs where underlying dysfunctions first occur, rather than surface-level individual symptoms, practitioners, and patients find greater long-term results with a systemic approach to healing. This simplified manner of treatment not only then regulates and restores the proper functioning of systems/organs of the body but simultaneously relieves symptoms that are exhibiting because of underlying causative dysfunctions. Although this process may take a longer amount of time, it is exponentially more advantageous when compared to the alternative of life-long maintenance of symptoms without ever addressing root cause dysfunctions.
As Dr. Alfred Pischinger proved, the matrix is crucial to health and disease because it supports everything – it brings nutrition, oxygen, hormones, and other vital substances to the tissues and removes excretion products and toxins. Biological medicine focuses on uncovering the blockages on a cellular level that allow the body to regulate itself. The blockages are the underlying causes of illnesses. Every symptom is a sign of deep-rooted systemic dysfunction and symptoms that may not seem connected often stem from the same underlying issue. For example, fibrocystic or dense breasts and migraines can have the commonality of liver detoxification insufficiencies.
Some of the key aspects of biological medicine include cleansing and detoxifying the body, building digestive strength through the intestines and GI tract, strengthening the immune system, and generally focusing on systemic dysfunction rather than symptomatic.
Biological medicine utilizes multiple forms of therapies to treat the patient, some of which include:
“In Biological Medicine we begin with the premise that the body’s normal state is health, and that if health is lost, something from outside has derailed the body. We find that the causes of disease are multi-factorial and that no single remedy will restore health. But we know that the body’s power to heal can always be reawakened if the underlying causes of disease are addressed and the body is given the support it needs to regenerate.”

The Extracellular Matrix and Ground Regulation by Alfred Pischinger – European Biological Medicine is rooted in this book and its explanation of the origin of disease. Dr. Pischinger’s explanation gives alternative health-care practitioners the scientific evidence and detailed physical structure of the basic principle of their disciplines. It is also useful in understanding the great importance of detoxification with respect to the proper inner milieu. or biological terrain.
In one study, Dr. David Taylor Reilly and his colleagues compared the effects of a homeopathic hayfever remedy with a placebo. In the double-blind controlled study, Dr. Reilly found that those who received the homeopathic remedy had six times fewer symptoms and were able to cut their use of antihistamines in half.

A Health-Technology Assessment Report and its recent update identified 265 clinical studies on the efficacy and effectiveness of anthroposophic medicine. The outcomes were described as predominantly positive. These studies, as well as a variety of specific safety studies, found no major risk but good tolerability. Economic analyses found a favorable cost structure. Patients report high satisfaction with anthroposophic healthcare.

Jennifer Jacobs, M.D., led a study that was conducted in Nicaragua and included eighty-one children with acute diarrhea. All the children received standard anti dehydration treatment for diarrhea, consisting of water containing salt and sugar. In addition, half the children received homeopathic treatment and half received a placebo. The study confirmed homeopathy’s effectiveness: the recovery time for children receiving homeopathic treatment was 20% faster than those receiving the placebo, reducing the bout of diarrhea by one day. These results are heartening because diarrhea is the leading cause of death in developing countries such as Nicaragua.

At the New York Center of Innovative Medicine, the principles of European Biological Medicine are a tenant of the healing approach applied. The various biological modalities spanning homeopathy, spagyric medicine, herbology, neural therapy, and many others are considered with each patient. However, the use of this approach and the varied treatment options are only applied in a highly tailored manner after an in-depth initial evaluation reveals it would be necessary for your personalized program of treatment. Because each person is unique, and their health needs are different, there is no set protocol for using these therapies nor is the patient able to request the use of any singular therapy if the medical team finds it would not be as helpful as another treatment or a specific combination of therapies. The ultimate goal is the complete restoration of health in the most efficient and safe manner, and with so many therapeutic options, it is impossible to know if any or a combination of European Biological Medicine therapies is right for you without an initial evaluation at our clinic.
